Since I don’t want to be carrying loads of cash in my pockets while staying in cheap hostels, one of the top priority mission I had after arriving in Auckland was to open a New Zealand bank account. I had done some searching and the most common bank in New Zealand are (in no particular order)
▸Bank of New Zealand
In order to open a New Zealand bank account while on working holiday you will need the following documents:
▸Proof of address
Your hostel can help you with your proof of address, YHA Auckland International, which is where I stayed at first printed one for me for 40 cents. Base Backpackers Auckland will help you with one if you stay a minimum of 3 nights.
Be warned though!
If you want to open a bank account in Auckland CBD you will need to schedule an appointment and they next available date may be weeks ahead, but if you go to the suburbs you may be able to open an account on the same day. They told me at Westpac that this is because opening a bank account for someone on working holiday visa takes over one hour so the busy CBD banks take appointments for it but in the suburbs the banks are less busy therefore more likely to be able to take you as a walk-in. I got turned down from 3 banks in the city before I went to a nearby suburb Newmarket and both Westpac and ANZ were able to take me on the same day.
Opening a bank account here was easy as long as you have all the documents with you and yay! it doesn’t cost anything. You will get 2 electronic accounts, one for savings and one for spending haha. And at both banks you will also get an ATM card on the same day.
If you want a debit card, which you probably might want in order to make online purchases etc it will costs $10/year and it takes about 5 business days to arrive (although mine took longer).
And if you don’t have a New Zealand address but dont want your debit card to be sent to your hostel, then you can have them send it to the bank branch and you can pick it up when it’s ready.
